CHAPTER SIX

The next morning, Colin looked out his window in the room Aunt Nellie had provided for him. The weather looked as if it would begin raining at any time. Choosing yesterday as the riding day was a fortunate thing. Most of the other guests had stayed for a late tea yesterday then returned home so there were very few people remaining at Twickenham Manor.

Of course, with the weather turning poor, his own trip into London would be postponed for a day or two. Traveling the twenty miles in the rain, or even on the somewhat muddy roads would be no good at all. If he’d known it would rain today, he would have just stayed at the inn last night. At least there, he could have avoided the necessity of talking with the guests still here, or even with Aunt Nellie.

It couldn’t be avoided any longer. If he remained in his room, there would be talk and speculation, and that was something he could do without.

His quick steps had nothing to do with the fact that Miss McIntyre would be there. The walk back to Aunt Nellie’s yesterday had been peaceful and enjoyable.

She’d asked questions about his estate, but it didn’t sound as if she were searching for details with ulterior motives. In fact, her questions were very well thought out and full of insight. He hadn’t expected her to know much about how to run an estate and the best way to turn a profit. She must have overheard her father talking on more than one occasion.

The hallway outside his room was empty, and Colin moved toward the stairs that led to the main floor. A lovely sound of music reached his ears. But it was completely foreign to him. He was almost certain it was from the pianoforte, but the melody was different. It intrigued him and Colin moved to the parlor where the pianoforte was. The breakfast room could wait.

It was unusual for someone to play in the morning to an audience. Of course, he had no idea when any of the young ladies ever practiced. His own sister had never learned the instrument. Perhaps this was a completely acceptable time. It was his first morning here after all.

Colin moved close to the open door and peeked in. Danielle sat at the instrument, leaning forward and pressing the keys with feeling and emotion. It was as if she had become part of the music itself, and Colin found himself unable to look away.

The sound had a bit of a familiar feel to it, yet he was certain he had never heard it before.

An American composer, most likely. He supposed there had to be some over there who would write music.

Danielle slowed down the tempo and began to sway gently at the pianoforte. Then her hands rose and fell with quick and deliberate movements, making his ears dance with delight at the melody she produced.

He wished he had some ability that could compare in any way to the music she created.
